ADIRONDACK BIKE TRAIL

Once it carried steam locomotives
and carloads of vacationers.
Now the trail invites
hikers and bikers to explore
from the lake
through forests
toward mountains
in the distance.
We chose our bicycles
– instead of a lake cruise –
and went riding through
tunnels of tall trees
festooned with wild flowers, ferns
and poison ivy
edged by boulders and
rock cliffs sprouting trees.
We coasted easily down long hills
knowing that our return trip
would be much harder work.
We stopped often
to read the historical plaques
and catch our breath.
Exercise for body, mind and spirit.
