ASH WEDNESDAY
God’s Plus Sign
– the cross –
surrounds us in myriad forms:
as jewelry and trinkets,
on church walls and windows,
in cheap art and elegant sculptures.
That symbol of torture now graces our world in
rough beams and polished wood,
gold plate and solid silver,
stained glass and wrought iron,
cheap paint and expensive oils,
childish scribbles and priceless masterpieces,
familiar forms and imaginative images.
But,
on Ash Wednesday,
made of ashes,
it becomes an X that marks the spot
God longs to scrub out clean
and fill with love!
