FINAL GIFTS
A custom has lately developed,
When someone leaves this sphere,
To lay within the casket
Some things that were held dear.
There’s often a family picture
Or a special gift or two.
Sometimes a favorite golf club,
Or a picture the grandkids drew.
There may be shown a lapel pin
Of a favorite organization.
Or perhaps a tiny U.S. flag
To express thanks to one’s nation.
At times a Bible rests upon
The casket’s velvet lining.
And flowers often lie beside
Where the deceased is reclining.
I wonder what will go with me
On my final journey on?
What will my family think I need
To take with me when I’m gone?
It won’t be money, things or fame,
Or reminders of earthly thrills.
D’ya s’pose they’ll adorn my casket
With some of my dozens of pills?
