BLANCO SETTLEMENT
Blanco Settlement is just east of the Texas hill country town of
Blanco, on the river of the same name. It is a privately-owned
establishment recommended to us by friends. It has twenty RV sites, nine fully furnished vintage-style cabins, an office and gift shop and is laid out like an old
frontier settlement. A windmill, outdoor well, porches with swings and
rocking chairs add to the frontier feeling. The spreading old shade trees
and beautiful, creative plantings give it a beauty all its own.
There are two densely planted wildflower gardens and the front door of
each cabin is surrounded by well tended flower beds. Scattered
attractively around the park are livestock watering troughs of various
sizes, claw-foot bathtubs, an antique wagon and various sized buckets all
filled with live flowers of various kinds and hues. Pinks, cacti,
sunflowers, hollyhocks, corn poppies, petunias, daisies, black-eyed susans,
pansies, geraniums, yucca plants, mums and dozens of blooms we could not
identify make this place a gardener’s delight. As we walked and drank in
the colors, a scissor-tailed flycatcher flitted around the garden and then
flew off toward the next patch of flowers.
The silent, smiling blooms invite the tired traveler to stop, relax,
enjoy and settle in for awhile in this little sanctuary on the bank of the
drought-stricken Blanco River. So, tonight we’re settled – and feel
temporarily "at home" – in Blanco Settlement, Texas.
