WILD SUNFLOWERS
They brighten many a road and byway,
With bright yellow smiles
and brown pug noses.
When it’s dry, they smile
through layers of dust.
On rainy days, they grin
through glistening drops.
The prairie winds may bend them low
But their sunny little faces
never frown!
Their mute mirth
is despised in Illinois as weed,
but embraced as Kansas’ state flower!
What’s the secret of their constant glory?
Could it come from their
community of many branches
which always faces the Sun?
