PARABLE
(Matthew 13:3-9 paraphrased for 21st
century)
A sower went out to sow. He carefully filled his fifteen-row planter
with bushels of the best of seed. Then, in his air-conditioned cab high
atop his mighty tractor, he began to sow his seed across his immense
field.
He planted carefully, in straight rows, exactly to the optimum depth
for the type of seed he was sowing. He diligently squared off the corners
of the rows, lifting and re-setting the planter chutes to prevent waste of
his precious seed.
No seed fell on rocky paths or among thorns. The birds went hungry and
yield was 200, 300 or even 500-fold.
And what might Jesus teach us from this parable? Listen, if you have
ears. Perhaps you can hear him whispering down through 2000 years:
"Bigger is OK, but ‘bigger’ is not God’s Word. No, God’s
Word is ‘Life,’ not ‘larger.’ And somewhere between the burial of
the dead seed and its resurrection as a green stalk, God’s Word of ‘Life’
is at work. In mysterious and unseen ways, life triumphs over death and
makes ‘bigger’ or ‘smaller’ seem trivial. Let the one who listens
to me understand - and join me in Life."
