Split Self
Two selves live deep within my soul,
Struggling to prevail.
To gain control of all my life –
My time, my gifts, my sail.
They are not twins, nor sisters true,
But half kin to each other.
Fathered by Custom and Inner Light,
Faith, their common mother.
Doing’s the name of my elder self,
Being, its upstart foe.
Their struggle continues unresolved
As on down life’s path I go.
Doing is busy, achieving great things.
She’s a leader, full of words, in a hurry.
Being’s reflective, creative and still,
Alone, withdrawn from life’s scurry.
But Doing is tense, judgmental, uptight,
On her God- starved daily pace.
And Being has doubts that her unique path
Is really her God-called space.
This conflict continues with in my soul. –
Perhaps it will thus always be –
‘Twixt Doing and Being as tomorrow’s way
And the real definition of ME.
