Forest Path

FOREST PATH

Sunlight-speckled shade.
Whispering leaves, whistling insects, bird notes.
Worn-smooth way with trip-over tree roots.
The song of a far-away stream.
The swish of a curious creature near my feet.
Grass, leaves and gravel leading downhill -
then up.
Around confusing curves sudden and unseen.
Can I trust the path to take me where it will?
Or turn back toward the known?
Others have ventured into its darker depths
But I can’t see where it goes!
Shall I seek certainty – or surprise?
Can I advance to adventure ahead?
Or retreat to that "good old path"
I have already trod?
Roots of indecision keep me here,
halfway between!
