DECAYING DREAMS AND DAFFODILS

Dotted across the countryside, you can see them:
Houses, once stately and grand,
now weathered and in ruins.
Homes, cozy and warm in a time gone by,
now roofless and exposed to the wiles of weather.
Sometime, long ago, each wreck was someone’s dream
– of comfort and protection
– of beauty and security
– of success and accomplishment.
But now, neglected and abandoned, they decay,
sinking inexorably into the earth
with timbers pointing skyward
like arms upraised in prayer.
Decaying dreams.
A landscape of gray despair!
And yet ----
A patch of color
- a glimpse of green
- an explosion of yellow
daffodils blooming around the domestic ruin
springing up from the same soil
that will, in time,
bury the decay of a human dream.
Human dreams decay and successes die.
But God sends daffodils
every spring.
